The surface at Newlands in Cape Town, where South Africa and India will play the second Test of the ICC World Test Championship series, has been evaluated as “unsatisfactory” by the ICC surface and Outfield Monitoring Process, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Tuesday.

Chris Broad, the ICC Match Referee, filed his report voicing the match officials’ concerns and after discussions with captains Dean Elgar and Rohit Sharma, who both thought the surface was subpar. The location has been given one demerit point as a result of the evaluation.

Cricket South Africa has been sent the report and has fourteen days to file an appeal against the sentence.

“It was very hard to bat on the pitch at Newlands,” Mr. Broad said. Throughout the game, the ball bounced swiftly and sometimes frighteningly, making it difficult to perform shots. A number of batters were struck on the gloves, and the unusual bounce also caused numerous wickets to fall.

What ICC Pitch Ratings Mean

If a pitch or outfield is deemed subpar by the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, that venue will get a certain amount of demerit points.

One demerit point will be given to locations whose outfields and pitches the match referee deems to be subpar.

Venues with designated unsuitable pitches and outfields will get three penalty points.

Merit points are valid for a five-year rolling term.

A venue will be barred from hosting any international cricket for a period of 12 months if it receives six demerit points (or above that barrier), and from hosting any international cricket for a period of 24 months if it achieves the threshold of 12 demerit points.
