Amidst worries from the sector, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for IT, has addressed important portions of the recent warning released by MeitY on March 1.

The advice primarily targets “significant platforms, and permission seeking from Meity is only for large platforms and will not apply to startups,” Chandrasekhar said. According to him, the advisory’s main emphasis is on “untested AI platforms” that are meant to be used on the “Indian Internet.”

He also emphasized that the advice acts as a kind of “insurance policy” for platforms, shielding them from future lawsuits from disgruntled customers. Getting authorization, properly labeling, and an agreement to reveal untested platforms to users are all essential for ensuring compliance.

He finished by saying, “Safety & Trust of India’s Internet is a shared and common goal for the government, users, and platforms.”

For those who are not aware, on March 1st, the Government of India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT released an advisory about platforms that make use of generative AI models and algorithms. The warning highlights that prior to their introduction in India, these platforms must have the “explicit permission of the government of India.” Additionally, the businesses must guarantee that their models cannot be used to “host, display, upload, modify, publish, transmit, store, update, or share any unlawful content” and that “penal consequences would result from non-compliance with provisions.”

This was before Google’s controversial Gemini generative AI platform was accused of prejudice when it answered a question regarding Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
